Goa

Surprisingly beautiful, this country of mine is awake all the time on the south-west coast of India, adorned with a bouquet of unforgettable beauty. The little land is called Konkan . At present we know this state as Goa. This state of our country has developed itself in its own cultural splendor since time immemorial. Isolated from the vast Deccan Plateau by the Western Ghats, this unique landmass on the shores of the Arabian Sea is the smallest state in our country. The area of Goa is only 3702 square kilometres. The population is 14, 58,540 only. In terms of population, this state is the fourth smallest in our country.

Goa was never associated with British India, even though it was close to India, which had been under British rule for almost two hundred years. Long before the British, in 1510, a group of Portuguese merchants set up camp in the northern part of this secluded marginal area lying on the shores of the Arabian Sea. They wanted to establish their own position somewhere in the Indian subcontinent, mainly with the aim of expanding their business to Indian settlements. But the then ruler of Bijapur, Sultan Yusuf Adil Shah could not accept such aggression of foreign merchants. The cunning Portuguese, with the help of the local pirate community in that sea and the local inhabitants, got into a fierce battle with the Sultan. The Sultan was defeated in that battle and Portuguese rule was introduced in the region. Goa remained a colony under Portuguese rule for the next four and a half centuries. Although the pages of history have changed frequently in the vicinity of this Konkan, it has never disturbed the Portuguese rulers of Goa.

Goa has been waking up with a completely different tradition from the very side of India. The Portuguese first established their capital at North Goa, now called Velha Goa or Old Goa, and later in the early nineteenth century, only in 1843 did the Portuguese move their capital to Panjim or Panaji. Since then, Panaji is still the capital of Goa. After the independence of India in 1947, the Portuguese rulers of Goa were requested by the Indian Republic to liberate Goa and return to Portugal, but the Portuguese rulers refused. On 19 December 1971, the Indian Army in a coup called Operation Vijay liberated Goa by ousting the Portuguese and declaring Goa, Daman and Diu as three Union Territories. Almost 28 years later, on May 30, 1987, the Government of India recognized Goa as a state under Indian republic, freeing it from the direct rule of central government. The 25th state of our country is bounded on the north by the state of Maharashtra, on the east and south by the state of Karnataka and on the entire western part by the Arabian Sea. According to a government survey, the average income of the people of Goa is about two and a half times higher than any other state in India. The survey also found that the quality of life of the people of Goa is the best in the country.

How to go to Goa.

Goa is connected to the rest of the country by air. The only airport in Goa is at Dabolim. Pre-paid taxis are available from the airport to anywhere in the state. The distance from the airport to the capital Panaji is about 30 kilometers, which takes about an hour. Goa has direct air links with many countries of the world. Throughout the year, especially during the tourist season from November to February, Dabolim Airport is crowded with foreign tourists.

If you want to come to Goa by rail, it is best to reach Mumbai by train from anywhere in the country. Being a major commercial city of India, Mumbai has frequent rail links across the country. Many trains leave for Goa all day from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Terminus or Lokmanya Tilak Railway Station. By taking these trains you can reach Madgaon or Vasco da Gama railway station in Goa. From there you can take a bus or take a pre-paid taxi to your destination. The only train to reach Madgaon or Vasco da Gama directly from Kolkata is the Amravati Express, only once in a week. It takes three days to reach Goa by rail from Kolkata.

You can reach Madgaon or Panaji in Goa by bus from Mumbai. Depending on the type of bus, it takes time. However, it takes about 12 to 16 hours to reach Goa by bus from Mumbai.

Where to stay in Goa.

Goa Tourism Hotels are the best places to stay in Goa. You will also find numerous hotels of different quality and different prices in Goa to suit your budget. Goa has two sides, one is North Goa, the other is South Goa. There are beaches on both sides. Many people want to spend a few days in North Goa and a few days in South Goa during their Goa tour. Again, some tourists choose a few beaches and spend a few days in different hotels near them. However, as per my advice, since Goa is a small place, it is better to spend it in a hotel near the beach of your choice without having to bother to open and pack your luggage again and again.

How long does it take to visit Goa?

Most tourists plan 3 nights and 4 days to visit Goa.

Arriving in Goa on the first day, you can pick up these bookings. They turn around in AC buses at low cost per head. You can go with them or rent a separate car and travel on your own. You can tell the hotel in advance for the car or you can take the package by arranging with a good travel agency before giving your complete program. The advantage of traveling in a package is that you do not have to carry any extra hassle while traveling. Your travel agency will arrange everything for you according to your preferences and needs.

Fourth day:

Dudhsagar Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in India. It is one of the best attractions in Goa. This waterfall descends from the heart of the lush green and dense Western Ghats. Today we will see this  Dudhsagar waterfall.

At an altitude of 320 meters or 1017 feet, the average width of this waterfall is about 100 feet. That is wide enough. Very close to this waterfall, there is a sanctuary named Lord Mahaveera Sanctuary and National park at Mollem.

This waterfall is located about 73 km away from the capital Panaji. Although this waterfall looks most beautiful during the rainy season, it is better to go on this tour during the tourist season due to safety reasons. After driving from Panaji to Kullem, which is 63 km away, you have to reach this waterfall by government jeep. Dudhsagar Falls is about 10 km from Kullem. The whole route is through dense jungle and several small mountain rivers. Deer, monkeys, countless unnamed birds, and occasionally larger wild animals can be seen along the way. You can reach the waterfall by purchasing a ticket from the forest department counter in Kullem and renting this jeep from there. It takes a separate ticket for the camera.

The Karnataka-bound railway has passed close to this waterfall. In fact, the waterfall is located on the border of Goa and Karnataka. Many trains pass by this waterfall all day long, the view is very beautiful.

Most of the people of Goa are accustomed to eating food cooked in coconut oil like the people of South India, if you do not like food cooked in coconut oil then you must know this before eating in a normal hotel or restaurant.

Although  it is crowded with tourists all year round and for this reason most of the hotels or restaurants now a day’s cook in unscented oil.

Most of the sweets in Goa is made with coconut. Goa’s famous sweet is  Bibinka’, it is made with coconut and its taste is extraordinary. And another sweet is ‘Dodola’, it doesn't have coconut in it, but it also has a memorable taste.

The people of Goa prepare a very delicate dish like pickles with different kinds of spices with different types of fish, prawn or pork. It is called ‘Balchao’. If it is made with Prawn, it is called 'Prawn-Balchao', if it is made with Pork; it is called 'Pork-Balchao'. This balchao with spicy and non-vegetarian flavors is also very popular among the people of Goa.

Goa is a very favorite state for drinkers. The price of all liquor in Goa is very low as compared to any other state in the country. From the top of the cashew nut fruit, which is called cashew apple in English, a special kind of local wine is made in Goa. Its name is Feni. Feni is a very popular drink in this state. There are no restrictions on drinking here, but smoking in public is prohibited in Goa, so be careful.

What is the best time to visit Goa?

The enchanting beauty of Goa looks impossibly good in any season, but the influence of the monsoon season is a bit more in this west coast state. So come to Goa in winter for the convenience of tourism.

It would be better to visit Goa from November to February.

Monsoon: June, July, August and September.
