His Majesty the king of all mountains, The Himalaya is our
protector throughout the northern part of our great India. A total of eleven
hill provinces of our country are located in the heart of the Himalayas. These
eleven states are incomparable in form. One of them is the state bordering the
western Himalayas, which we call Devbhoomi Himachal. From time
immemorial, this sacred area of immense beauty has been identified as the
abode of the gods. In the Markandeya Purana or The Sapta Shotee Chandi
we find the story of Kalika Devi, the Bhima Kalika temple of Sarahan,
founded by the middle Pandava Bhima of the Mahabharata that the temple still
stands incomparable in faith and devotion to its glory. The location of some of
the most ancient pilgrimage sites of our country is also in this state. Such as
Jwalamukhi Temple, Chintapurni Temple, Baijnath Temple etc.

It is bounded on the east by Tibet, on the north by Ladakh
and Jammu and Kashmir, on the west by Punjab, on the southwest by the state of
Haryana, and on the south by Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Most of the
Himalayan region in British-occupied India was part of the British-ruled Punjab
Province. After independence, the hilly areas of this part were brought under
an autonomous body called "Chief Commissioners Province of Himachal
Pradesh". Later, in 1966, a few more hill tracts belonging to the Punjab
province were included in this part and it was turned into a Union Territory.
Only in 1971 did the Indian government declare this part of the country a
separate state called “Himachal Pradesh”.
